What are the types of Digital Signage available?
Digital Signage is available in multiple technologies, each offering different ways of engaging with your audience. Different technologies and how they can be best utilized within this new age of Digital Signage will be summarized below:
Indoor, Outdoor and Transparent LED Screens are all available in modular panels making them extremely easy to install and maintain, sizing is completely customizable for any project requirements. Due to the modules and the way in which LED Screens connect it allows for seamless large format displays with options for all projects.
Indoor LED Screens
Indoor LED Screens are for areas where seamless large format screens are required, Indoor LED Screens have been progressively improving every year with the main improvement being Pixel Pitch. Pixel Pitch is the screen’s resolution, it is the distance between the individual LED’s; for example, a 1.5mm Pixel Pitch has 1.5mm between each LED. The latest development within Indoor LEDs is Micro LED (MIP) which means Micro in Package, Micro LED is usually below 0.9mm Pixel Pitch and is used for high resolution digital walls for advertising. With Micro LED being a newer technology, it does command a higher price point and if the resolution is not paramount for the application, pixel pitches over 1.2mm would be more suitable and a lot more cost effective. Micro LED is seeing a huge growth within control rooms, corporate headquarters and high end residential (cinema rooms), all of these applications require the very best in terms of resolution.
When it comes to the more traditional Digital Signage, VISIONAIR-E, apart from the range of Micro LED Screens, offers Indoor LED Screens with Pixel Pitches from 1.2mm to 3.9mm Pixel Pitch. These are the more cost-effective options so can be justified due to the impact these LED Screens have upon customers with regards to drawing passing football in the store. 1. Outdoor LED Screens
Outdoor LED Screens use the same base technology as Indoor LED Screens, but they are usually manufactured within an IP 65 Rated housing / enclosure. This then allows the LED Screens to be used outside and be exposed to the elements without being damaged. Due to the difference in application, Outdoor LED Screen usually have higher Pixel Pitches as they are used more for advertising on buildings where viewing distance is much greater. The most popular Pixel Pitch when it comes to Outdoor LED Screens is 10mm. VISIONAIR-E can offer Outdoor LED Screens from 1.5mm to 10mm as standard, but Pixel Pitches over 10mm are available upon request. Outdoor LED Screens are an extremely affordable solution in terms of Digital Signage and create impactful advertising. Cities such as Miami are seeing more and more Outdoor LED Screens being used such as apartments, shopping malls and hotels. Another key area Outdoor LED Screens are being used is bars, clubs and poolside’s in apartments and hotels.
2. Transparent LED Screens
Transparent LED Screens still use LEDs, but these LEDs are composed in a different format and structure to Indoor and Outdoor LED. Due to the way Transparent LEDs are designed they use a structure that has LEDs going horizontal across a bar, this bar then has a gap between where the next bar containing the next set of LEDs is. This gap is what provides the transparency that comes with Transparent LED. VISIONAIR-E can offer Pixel Pitches 2.8mm x 5.6mm, 3.9mm x 10.4mm and 10.4mm x 10.4mm. The Pixel Pitch is slightly different to that of Indoor and Outdoor LED, for example with the Pixel Pitch: 3.9mm x 10.4mm the 3.9mm is the distance left to right between the LEDs and the 10.4mm is the distance between the LEDs top to bottom. This top to bottom measurement is the size of the gap that provides the transparency. With Transparent LED the higher the Pixel Pitch leads to a lower resolution and higher transparency level.
Transparent LED is a recent innovation and allows LED Screens to be used in places where there is a requirement to keep the natural lighting. Examples of areas where Transparent LED have been used are Casinos, Hotels, Museums, Retail Stores, this solution creates a more eye-catching display and allows content to seemingly come from nowhere.
1. Indoor LCD Screens
a. LCD Advertising Screens
Advertising Screens are an extremely common product seen within many fast-food chains, retail stores, football stadiums, anywhere where there is a need to advertise offers and / or to inform customers of information. These advertising screens are Commercial Grade allowing 18 hours a day usage as the panels are specifically designed to last under a commercial application.
b. Video Walls
LCD Video Wall Panels are used to create large format advertising displays, usually using a series of 49” or 55” Video Wall Panels in a 2 x 2, 2 x 3 or 3 x 3 format. As a series of panels are used, there are small bezels between each panel, so, unlike Indoor LED Screens, LCD Video Walls are not a seamless display but are a more economical solution. These are extremely easy to control and content can simply be controlled by a networkable media player or controller. Even though LCD Video Walls have some weaknesses such as the bezels (around 0.14”) they have some substantial strengths which makes LCD Video Walls the more suitable option in many installations. Areas where high resolution is a necessity and budgets are a restrictive factor is where LCD Video Walls are the perfect choice. Producing screen sizes over 100” in HD resolution for a fraction of the cost of high-resolution Indoor LED. Areas where these are popular include behind POS counters in retail stores, banks, corporate boardrooms, reception area and hotels to name a few.
1. High Brightness LCD Screens:
a. Indoor High Brightness Advertising Screens
High Brightness Window Advertising Screens are the ideal solution for window displays where there is direct exposure to intense daylight and sunlight. VISIONAIR-E can offer these screens from 43” to 75” which are 2000nits and 4K UHD. Due to these High Brightness screens having a brightness rating of 2000 nits they can provide a strong and vibrant image even under intense sunlight. This makes them an ideal Digital Signage solution for windows facing sidewalks and roads. These High Brightness Windows Displays are commonly used in retail stores, banks, fast food chains and restaurants. These screens are a lower cost alternative to LED Screens and provide 4K resolution allowing customers to view your message clearly from directly in front of the display.
b. Outdoor High Brightness Screens

This technology does require LED backlight (read more about the technology here) which usually required a display case or backbox. This then allows you to display items within this display case and overlay content about the product or artefact to engage and entertain customers. The Transparent LCD Display Case is the same technology but is a finished keystone solution that can be easily used straight out of the box. This is the perfect solution for retails stores and trade show exhibitors where a finished solution that can quickly be set up is essential. The latest technology to enter the market is Transparent OLED, currently available as a 30” and 55” screen size with a larger 77” model set to launch in 2024. This cutting-edge solution provides a transparent screen solution without the need for backlighting. Due to Transparent OLED having self-lit pixels it means it can be used in various areas where Transparent LCD will not be suitable. This solution is available from VISIONAIR-E as a finished solution but also as a Panel Kit suitable for integration, offering a much more versatile solution for AV integrators. Currently this technology is only available as HD (1080p).
b. Transparent LED (refer above)
Mirror Advertising Screens are an underutilized form of Digital Signage, this technology allows the signage to remain hidden until the content is turned on. This content then magically appears which catches the eye of customers to capture their attention and deliver your message more effectively. Available in various sizes from 32” to 86” they can be used in changing rooms, retail stores, cruise liners, shopping malls, the possibilities are endless.
1. Front Projection
Front Projection is available in various forms of physical hardware, from self-adhesive films to rigid substrates. A great option for large format Digital Signage where Indoor LED is not possible due to budget limitations and a high-resolution display is required. Products such as Omegavision are available as a film and a rigid screen, perfect for use in any setting. With front projection the substrate needs to be able to evenly distribute the projected light to the corners to create a strong image without drop off or hot spotting. This is what makes the difference between a high quality and low-quality projection material, image quality is an essential part of delivering a high-quality message via Digital Signage that your customers will acknowledge.
When it comes to a more specific form of Front Projection, lenticular based ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screens are used. These require UST (Ultra Short Throw) projection from below and reject up to 85% of light from above. This is the ideal product for retails stores, creating large 120” 4K display screens that deliver a high quality image and unlike Video Walls require very little maintenance.
1. Rear Projection
Rear Projection is more unique than Front Projection as the material used needs to evenly diffuse the light from behind the material whilst capturing enough light to create a strong and vibrant image. Optical diffusion materials are used by VISIONAIR-E that allow for the number 1 quality Rear Projection solutions in the industry.
